Heidi Latsky Dance, Behind the Scenes at Pier59 - 2/18/2020

More adventures in dance. It’s kind of funny how dance is all over my personal and professional work even though I’ve never been a dancer or part of that community. That said, I find it so easy to shoot dancers as subjects since they are essentially athletes who point their athleticism at emotional expression instead of competition.

Heidi Latsky has been in my orbit since I saw an early version of her company’s DISPLAYED, so I was happy when she hit me up about a volumetric video shoot she was doing to expand the project. I think DISPLAYED was one of the best uses of technology as a medium alongside a more traditional medium (dance in this case) that I’ve ever seen. So often projects like that focus much more on the power of the technology than the power of an artist’s vision and this did the exact opposite. I think the timing of their work and the fact that they collaborated with Google made it feel like a companion to Body, Movement, Language in a way that I wish was contextualised better. It was a pleasure to spend two days with Heidi and the beautiful and magnetic Jen Bricker as they worked to make all of this technology submit to their artistic vision. A great shot of inspiration that I’m going to carry for a long time.
